Infortrend: Intelligent Drive Recovery technology turbo-charges volume rebuild

EonStor DS 3000 series enterprise storage systems continue to add sophisticated data protection and backup capabilities with new firmware iterations. We have recently deployed Intelligent Drive Recovery, or IDR – a new smart media rebuild routine that uses advanced algorithms that work together with HDD S.M.A.R.T and restore entire volumes at a fraction of the time traditional rebuild would require. IDR detects imminent drive failures by constantly monitoring error thresholds and conducting media scan, and can be set to automatically restore a drive using RAID 6-integrated spares. It also provides users real time alerts and notices regarding drive status and pending recovery/replacement actions.

Internal Infortrend testing shows that a 4TB NL-SAS drive can be rebuilt in around nine hours thanks to IDR, whereas the same media would need up to 60 hours of rebuild time on a similar storage system without IDR, assuming users wish to maintain host I/O and avoid service suspension. The time savings are massive, leading to drastically reduced impact on productivity and mostly eliminated system downtime. IDR is easily accessible via our exclusive SANWatch UI, and can be operated in several modes: manual, auto, and scheduled. The latter mode performs drive rebuild for a specified volume as needed, typically because the drive has aged and is slated for replacement. In all modes, IDR has been engineered to have minimal influence on storage and host performance, requiring minimal I/O overhead.
